The first International Contest for IO Professional Competence is initiated and will be held by Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) from December 2022 to April 2023. The Contest aims at deepening studies in fields related to international organizations (IOs) and global governance, fostering more professionals for IOs, and increasing students' interest in and understanding of IOs. It serves as a platform for students who are interested in global governance and IO careers to build their competence in problem-solving, theory and practice.

THEME OF CONTEST

International Organization SDG Knowledge Sharing

SCOPE OF CONTEST

Each team may select one specific case of an international organization to study its successes and/or failures in realizing one or several 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs, 17 in total) and write a report to summarize the findings in Chinese, English, or French. Contestants may use any research methods they deem applicable (including methods across disciplines such as politics, law, economics, and management science). The report should focus on the major problems in today’s global governance and solutions taken by the IO that each team selects.

HIGHLIGTS AND SIGNIFICANCE

1. The Contest focuses on major issues of IOs and global governance. It encourages students to follow the progress that IOs have made in realizing the SDGs, and to document, summarize, and analyze the research focuses and major problems for IOs.

2. The Contest is a global platform of IO research and exchanges for universities. It builds the momentum for IO studies and improves the quality of research by initiating a competitive mechanism, through which the discipline building and research methodologies of IO studies will be further improved.

3. The Contest hones students’ versatile abilities. Students are encouraged to experience the IOs’ practices personally in aspects such as decision-making, implementation, leadership, cooperation, and culture. They can strengthen their abilities to analyze and solve problems related to IOs with theoretical knowledge and become better team workers and creative thinkers.

4. The Contest builds transnational and cross-cultural competence based on confidence in culture. BFSU offers courses on multiple disciplines and foreign languages so that the multilingual graduates can better understand and integrate different cultures when working in international organizations. Students are encouraged to embrace cultural diversity with an open mind and seek cooperation among different cultures.

PROSPECTIVE CONTESTANTS

Students that are currently enrolled in bachelor’s or master’s degree programs across the world.

Students from different countries, universities, and majors are encouraged to explore the performance of IOs in realizing SDGs with interdisciplinary methods. The Contest is designed to increase students' interest in and understanding of IOs, and build their competence in problem-solving, theory and practice.
